NET-ZERO PREFAB
Oakland, CA
I had the good fortune to work as the project manager on this unique and challenging live/work residence during my time as an associate at Dan Smith & Associates. The building was designed and constructed in a collaboration with ZETA communities, the project's developer. The 1500 square foot structure is part of a duplex within a small artist/industrial/residential neighborhood in Oakland, CA.
The building is designed to be low-income housing run solely on electricity that is produced entirely on site, thus making it completely net-zero in its energy use. We worked directly with Building Science Corporation to come up with innovative ways to maximize the energy efficiency of the structure and its mechanical systems.
To keep costs down and to allow for further reductions in cost, the building was prefabricated in four individual boxes.
*Completed while at Dan Smith & Associates, Architects.
