Why would you hire an architect? What do they actually do?
First off, let's go over why you wouldn't. Already laid out your perfect dream home? All the storage is carefully laid out and the code compliant light fixtures are selected? Do you know exactly how you want to remodel your leased retail space with all the finishes picked out? If you answered yes to the above questions, you don't need an architectural services, you simply need drafting. In this case, we will simply draw your vision, no questions asked. However, if you want someone to look over those plans and give you helpful suggestions, or for someone to take your rough vision and turn it into a reality, consider talking to an architect. It is what we spend almost a decade studying and training for.
What is an architect? It's a job title that most people recognize, but few actually understand what it entails. Perhaps that is because of the large number of romantic comedy male leads that always easily handle an architecture job, spend hours at the gym, have plenty of time to tan and live in amazing modern homes with the best view in the City (I have never met an architect that matches this description). In reality, an architect is someone that spends a lot of time at a desk working on a number of jobs with the hopes of creating a client's ideal home or commercial space.
An architect provides a service. We offer our years of experience in training to help you build or remodel that structure. Think of it like hiring a lawyer (I truly wish I had a more exciting comparison). You could write that contract on your own, but are you sure you have everything in there that you'll need?
Architects are particularly useful when they are brought on to a project early in the process; ideally when you are getting into your project's program (how many bedrooms will you need, etc). However, we can also help figure out your program or even advise you in your property selection. It is amazing how your site selection can increase or mitigate the cost of construction.
Once we are on a project, we are traditionally there all the way through until you are handed the keys.
We will start off working through different layouts of your floor plans, and discussing styles for your elevations. Once the design is settled, we will draw up a full set of plans that will be submitted to the proper reviewing agency. We will be there to make sure all those boxes are checked and to help get the project approved.
Even after a permit is in hand, we will be there to provide construction services. Do you have time to be on the job site every week or to be on call when a question comes up from the contractor? This is what an architect does. We are your eyes on the job site to help make sure the project is getting built to your satisfaction. We are there to answer any questions that come up. With remodels, there is always a surprise hiding in the walls. We will be there so you don't have to be.
These are all the services that you are able to take advantage of when you hire an architect. Sadly a sexy Hollywood-style actor is not included.
